Is Mounjaro approved by FDA as a weight loss medicine?

No. FDA has not yet approved Mounjaro to treat obesity (last updated: 7 Nov 2022). It is approved only for managing type-2 diabetes. FDA is currently in the process of reviewing it for the treatment of obesity. On Oct 6 2022, FDA granted Mounjaro a fast-track designation for the investigation of its effectiveness on adults with obesity. We will keep updated when FDA gives Mounjaro approval as a weight loss medication.

How does Mounjaro work for weight loss?

Mounjaro activates the body’s receptors for GIP and GLP-1. These two natural incretin hormones reduce the food intake, making you feel fuller for a longer time and also increase energy expenditure which ultimately causes weight reduction. GIP and GLP-1 have noticeable effects on markers of metabolic dysregulation such as body weight, glucose, and lipids.
